I was really hoping to be posting about my 1890s skirt project today but, it turns out that applying and sewing about 18 metres of Russian Braid takes quite a while! Not to mention, I now have the oh-so-exciting task of hand sewing the hem facing in. So, while I can’t yet write about that, I can write about the quick trip that I took to Caccia Birch a couple of weeks ago.
It wasn’t supposed to be a mad dash about the house and grounds, but when we were about to leave home there was an unexpected change of plans. I was all dressed up and ready to go, but then I was all dressed up with nowhere to go – for about an hour while waiting for the plan to get back on track.

Fortunately, it did, but unfortunately, it didn’t give us as much time as we had originally planned while the house was still open to the public. On top of that, the day was grey and rather uninspiring, the light was already starting to fade and the gloominess of it all stole into my mood, making it harder for me to enjoy much of the visit at all.

On arriving, we tumbled out of the car and tried to make the most of the short space of time that we had but it did feel quite like a mad dash about the house. After sifting through the photos when I got home I found that I didn’t like most of them, either they were good in general, I looked miserable, or there was something about them that just wasn’t right.
Some, however, were okay, and I even like a few of them so they’re the ones that made the cut. Apologies for the quality of some of these photos – the lighting wasn’t so good inside by the time we got there.
The staircase was probably my favourite location because it afforded shots both from below and from above.
I wore my Bronze Dress – also known as my Evolving Dress because I keep changing it and am still not 100% happy with it. When I post about my day out at the Coach House Museum you’ll see how it looked on its first outing.

Lesson learned during this excursion – rushing about takes away much of the enjoyment of visiting a place such as this. And also, when it’s a grey day in the middle of Autumn, lighting isn’t going to be the best so it’s best not to be racing against the light as well as the clock.
Hopefully, I’ll get to visit Caccia Birch again in the near future and will be able to get some better photographs – probably in a different outfit. Maybe in my 1890s once I get it finished. Speaking of…. I’d better get started on hand sewing that facing….
